Nomfundo Dlamini - New young fashion designers
A 2009 Ifa Lethu Young Fashion Designer winner, Nomfundo is Kwa-Zulu Natal born and after completing her schooling at Brettonwood High School, received her National Diploma in Clothing Design from the Durban University of Technology ( Faculty of Arts) in 2007.
She served her internship in Karen Monk-Klinsjtra’s studio and has been supporting herself through various administrative jobs since then. She considers the Ifa Lethu award as her opportunity to break into the world of fashion.
Ifa Lethu invited young designers to create a six-piece collection to complement the 2010 World Cup - a range that is snazzy, sporty, upmarket and inspired by the Ifa Lethu mission to build a South African brand and to promote development in the local fashion industry.
Greg Wallis, Ifa Lethu’s fashion consultant and clothing specialist, who was nominated by Anglo American and Business Day as Mentor of the Year 2008/9, explained: "It is a wonderful opportunity for junior designers who have had some experience in putting collections together. The winners will join forces alongside the existing Ifa Lethu designers to create a uniquely South African collection .
”The first opportunity for these two young women was to show their designs at the Ifa Lethu Fashion Show at the SMME Fashion Show in Durban in September. They experienced a world class environment which included Models, Sound Facility, Lighting, Make-up & Hair Specialist, Dressers, a Backstage Manager and Wardrobe Manager, Choreographer and Stage Set Design – Runway.
Thandeka Gumede - New young fashion designers
Thandeka Gumede completed her schooling at Kingsway High School in Kwa-Zulu Natal, and holds a BA Degree in Fashion Designing, from Style Design College.
She is one of two winning designers who applied for the Ifa Lethu 2009 Young Designers Competition and has already shown her designs at the Ifa Lethu Fashion Show at the SMME Fashion Show in Durban in September 2009. The SMME Fashion Show gave these young designers the experience of a world class environment which included Models, Sound Facility, Lighting, Make-up & Hair Specialist, Dressers, a Backstage Manager and Wardrobe Manager, Choreographer and Stage Set Design – Runway.
